THEME OF THE YEAR

WHY SELF-LOVE?

SELF-LOVE?

DEFINITION

YOUR PART!

Self-love is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth. Self-love is dynamic; it grows by actions that mature us. When we act in ways that expand self-love in us, we begin to accept much better our weaknesses as well as our strengths, have less need to explain away our short-comings, have compassion for ourselves as human beings struggling to find personal meaning, are more centered in our life purpose and values, and expect living fulfillment through our own effects.

                                                                                        - PsychologyToday.com "A Seven-Step Prescription for Self-Love"

After reviewing surveys and speaking with past mentees, it has been decided that this year's theme is self-love. We chose "Self-Love" because oftemtimes we forget or fail to take care of ourselves. Audre Lorde once said, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." In a world that pressures us to look, dress and behave a certain way, striving to remain true to yourself is important.

What SPEAK plans to do this year is to teach the students how to express themeselves through art and three main themes:

1. Self-Care and Advocacy

2. Deconstructing Images: "Embracing Your Inner Unicorn"

3. Overcoming Self-Destruction and Self-Hatred

The first workshop will be September 4th, 2013! If you are interested in getting involved with SPEAK please come to our first workshop! We will also be at The Gaines Old Black Culture Center's annual Fall Fest on September 11, 2013.
